Su familia se mudó a Toronto (Canadá) cuando apenas contaba un año de vida. En 1991 se licenció en periodismo. Su interés por el cine procede de sus padres, que son actores. Gracias a una serie de trabajos por cuenta propia en la revista Eye Weekly consiguió una buena reputación como crítica del género de terror, películas independientes y cine canadiense.

Fue profesora de guión, desarrollo de series e historia del cine canadiense en la Escuela de Cine de Toronto. También ha escrito críticas para http://www.film.com y la revista de terror canadiense Rue Morgue. Varios de sus relatos han sido llevados a la televisión gracias a la serie antológica The Hunger.
