Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Hartford, EE. UU., 1860 – 1935.

Intelectual multidisciplinar de finales del siglo XIX, además de feminista convencida y defensora de los derechos civiles de las mujeres. Su padre era bibliotecario y entre sus familiares se encontraba Isabella Beecher, sufragista, y Harriet Beecher, escritora abolicionista.

Su infancia fue complicada debido al abandono de su padre, y tuvo que trabajar para costearse la graduación en la Escuela de Diseño de Rhode Island. Tanto el matrimonio de su amiga Martha como el suyo propio y, sobre todo, el nacimiento de su primera hija, la sumieron en una profunda depresión, que le serviría para escribir El papel amarillo años más tarde.

Fue criticada por su divorcio y la escasa convencionalidad de su familia, además de por sus ensayos y conferencias feministas. Su obra Herland supone una de las primeras expresiones de ciencia ficción feminista. Defensora también de la eutanasia, Gilman se suicidó en 1935, tras serle diagnosticado un cáncer de pecho terminal.
