Editora y autora de relatos, centrada en las posibilidades del formato corto. Su obra puede catalogarse dentro del realismo mágico, con una marcada influencia de la ciencia ficción, la fantasía, el terror y el misterio. Dirige junto a su marido la editorial Small Beer Press. Ha impartido multitud de talleres para escritores, como el Clarion o el Instituto de Verano de Escritura de la Universidad de Massachusetts Amherst.

Su obra se desarrolla casi exclusivamente en forma de relatos, que le han valido multitud de nominaciones y galardones a premios como el Locus, el Nebula, el Hugo o el Bram Stoker. También ganó el Premio Mundial de Fantasía como editora junto a Gavin J. Grant.
