Alice Bradley Sheldon, ‘James Tiptree Jr.’, ‘Raccoona Sheldon’

Alice B. Sheldon creció entre Chicago, en la casa de sus padres, y en África, donde la familia realizó diferentes expediciones a lo largo de su infancia y adolescencia. Creció con la vocación de pintora, que más tarde descartó, y tuvo diversos trabajos, entre los que se enumeran analizar fotografías aéreas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, tras lo que tuvo que viajar a Alemania y vivir las consecuencias del Holocausto, formar parte de lo que posteriormente sería la CIA y graduarse en Psicología en la American University, donde se doctoró en psicología experimental en 1967.

Apasionada de la ciencia ficción en la infancia, empezó a escribir relatos cuando se encontró en una encrucijada vital; escogió un pseudónimo para diferenciar su vida de autora de relatos de la científica, pero James Tiptree Jr. se convirtió en una máscara para Sheldon, quien la usó hasta que se relacionaron sus experiencias vitales con el obituario de su madre en 1977; hasta entonces, mucha gente del ambiente literario de la época pensaba que Tiptree, o Tip, era un hombre, y fue un shock para muchos de ellos.

La temática de sus relatos, en especial de los de su década más prolífica, giran en torno a la alienación, el sentimiento de hogar, el feminismo y la posición de la mujer. Por otro lado, los relatos de Raccoona Sheldon se centran en la naturaleza que rodeaba su hogar. Recibió múltiples premios: entre ellos, el Nebula por “Love is the Plan the Plan is Death”, el Hugo por “Houston, Houston, ¿me recibes?” y “La muchacha que estaba conectada”,  y el SF Chronicle por “The Only Neat Thing to Do”.

Su nombre dio lugar a los que ahora se denominan premios Otherwise, concedidos en la convención WisCon, y que se centran principalmente en obras que debaten el género en obras de ciencia ficción y fantasía; en 2019 se produjo el cambio de nombre del premio a causa de la controversia relacionada con su muerte en lo que ha sido considerado un pacto de suicidio.
