Barbara Hambly se graduó en Historia Medieval en la Universidad de California en Riverside, y vivió un año en Burdeos (Francia) durante sus estudios. Durante su adolescencia y juventud, fue miembro de asociaciones de recreaciones históricas, siempre en consonancia con su gusto por la Historia. Trabajó como profesora de instituto, camarera, editora técnica y empleada en una tienda, pero siempre dedicó su tiempo libre a la escritura.

Se enamoró de la fantasía durante su infancia, momento en el que se obsesionó con la lectura de El Señor de los anillos. En 1982, publicó su primera novela: The Time of the Dark (El regreso de los seres oscuros, Timun Mas, 1991). A partir de ese momento, Hambly dedicó todo su tiempo a la escritura de novelas de todo género: fantasía, ciencia ficción, terror, novela histórica y suspense, entre otros. Fue presidenta de la Asociación de Escritores de Ciencia Ficción y Fantasía de América entre 1994 y 1996, y sus obras han sido nominadas a premios literarios, consiguiendo el Premio Locus a la mejor novela de terror en 1989 con Those Who Hunt the Night (Cazadores nocturnos, Timun Mas, 1991).

Sus novelas están llenas de personajes inusualmente reflejados en los libros, como hechiceras que son madres, brujas adultas con menopausia o un vampiro filólogo. Además, sus temas tratan siempre sobre la vida y las relaciones personales, así como el dolor y la pérdida.
